Holbox Island May 2025
Holbox is a beautiful sandy island and all round
paradise off the coast of Mexico in the Gulf of Mexico, but verging on the
Caribbean sea which leads to wonderful wildlife in the seas there. I had heard
about it 7 years ago when I had been planning a visit to Claudia but not made
it at that time. Claudia has been several times and has very special memories
there so we were excited to plan a trip there together at the endo f my time
with her.
The Serenity beach club at our 'Holbox Dreams' hotel
was just that. It has a palm leaf roof and the Gulf of Mexico as one
wall. Below sails and palm fringed canopies were sofa sun loungers on the shell
white beach with the sea gently lapping the shore. It was like a film!!!
Out on the bay brown pelicans soared and dived for the fish
that tickled your legs if you stood still for two long! The sea was warm and
welcoming and a gentle breeze dissipated the 40* heat - bliss.
The only tiny wrinkle was that for most of our stay our
beach had grey, slippy, smelly sludge on the shore line. I nearly took a tumble
when I went to have a paddle but this led to a meet-cute situation so a
blessing in disguise and we soon discovered that further down the beach
there were glorious white sandy beaches to swim from.
There was a lovely start to each day, with breakfast served
on the beach to the sound of the waves and Pelicans. A stunning self
service hot buffet was served in the morning. Chilaquiles were a regular
alongside Mexican eggs (scrambled with bacon or peppers or something mixed in)
and delicious fresh fruit. You barely needed to move a muscle from
breakfast to sunbathing.
On our first day at the hotel we arrived in the afternoon
and had a late lunch of crevice fish, prawns and taco chips with my favourite
drink in Mexico; Mesqalita y Jamaica: Mesqual tequila with Jamaica (Whomayker)
juice. Jamaica is dried and then re-hydrated hibiscus flowers - delicious. The
cocktail glass has a Chilli and salt rim, loads of ice which you have to keep
topping up it melts so fast😋
We spent our 4 days on Holbox exploring the beautiful
beaches and sandbanks by bicycle and ATV's , eating fabulous ceviche and fresh
fish dishes, even a lobster pizza which is a bit of a waste of lobster for me
but when they are so plentiful here I guess you see them differently.
We lazed in hammocks and chatted to fellow travelers and
enjoyed the music in town in the evenings. If the island was beautiful, the
mosquitos were beasts. They were vicious!! On the first evening I got 40 on my
back and over 60 on my legs in about 10 mins racing back to the hotel after
watching the beautiful sunset, further along the beach. I was really careful
after that.
