Cholul, Merida: May 2025

 Cholul

Claudia and I are on an outing to the nearby town of Cholul. We are having out hair done and Claudia is also going full fancy-lady and getting a manicure.

I took the chance to have a coffee and cake in a  restaurant, Cafe Mango.

It was a beautiful retro cafe with dark furniture, crystal glasses displayed in cabinets and eclectic art on the peeling walls.

The guys working  there today had matching face piercings and were so sweet and thougtful.

I had wonderful strong coffee and a New York Roll. What a revelation! A sweet spiralled bread, like a panatona, toped with cinnamon icing, drizzled with honey and scatters with toasted pecans and bacon bits. It was delicious!

On the way out I was presented with 2 mongos, the boys pointed out the ENORMOUS mango tree above the cafe and said they gave customers mangos because they always had too many!

Claudia was still being pampered so I decided to look at the Franciscan church but it was closed as it’s the afternoon and everyone is having a siesta .

Next to the church, through a lovely garden of fruit trees and paths is a cenote (an underground lake) but this was fenced off, I’m assuming it’s dangerous. So I decided to walk to another cenote just 30 mins outside the town.

I set off but quickly remembered I had no hat or sun block or water and it’s 37* today.

I decided to wait for Claudia!!

This bakery became a favourite of mine and we returned several times for their fabulous pastries and bread
