The Lonely Chairs

  

33 large empty chairs made of iron and bronze, just simple chairs like old fashioned dinning room chairs  are laid  out across the square, mostly singularly but a few are grouped in a line by the tram stop. 

This is Ghetto Heroes Square, in Podgórze/ It was the centre of the Nazi constructed ghetto. Just just over the river from the main part of  Krakow it was an ordinary square but became the centre of the ghetto. Here Jews arrived carrying their possessions and furniture from outlying areas to be detained in the ghetto. They also assembled here, gathered for 'relocation' by the Nazis and their furniture was left behind when they were transported to the gas chambers.

its lovely to see children clambering over them but they look so lonely and deserted in the snow and at night.
