Acrobats bouncing in the wind

Image
This morning I crossed the  The Father Bernatek footbridge and was astounded by the acrobats in bridge wires. They reminded me so much of the acrobat crossing the river in Bydgozcz (my very first blog) and low and behold its the same sculpture. Which came first wonder?

The Lonely Chairs

Image
33 large empty chairs made of iron and bronze, just simple chairs like old fashioned dinning room chairs  are laid  out across the square, mostly singularly but a few are grouped in a line by the tram stop.  This is Ghetto Heroes Square, in  Podgórze/ It was  the centre of the Nazi constructed ghetto. Just just over the river from the main part of  Krakow it was an ordinary square but became the centre of the ghetto. Here Jews arrived carrying their possessions and furniture from outlying areas to be detained in the ghetto. They also assembled here, gathered for 'relocation' by the Nazis and their furniture was left behind when they were transported to the gas chambers. its lovely to see children clambering over them but they look so lonely and deserted in the snow and at night. https://www.hasta-standrews.com/features/2019/2/18/the-empty-chairs-of-krakow

Oskar Schindler's Factory Museum

Image
Today as part of my stay in Krakow, I visited the Oskar Schindler's Factory Museum.  I'm afraid the photos don't really do it justice. It is really well set up with different rooms explaining aspects of life in Kraków before the Nazi invasion in 1939, the guide took us on a journey through Krakow life at the time of the invasion and occupation via different rooms/ streets explaining  the step by step targeting of Jews in Krakow and explaining what it was like for Poles and Jews living through the war. Schindler's former factory is the site for the museum (and the modern art museum)  showing his office, his secretaries office and the main characters in his story.  Street names removed and changed to Nazi names for example the Rynek Glowny (city square) was renames Adolf Hitler Square.   This is the  hall of choices. 1st hand accounts of choices  Cracovians made to help or save people This one refers to the tram driver who drove the No 3 bus f...

Fat Thursday, Farmers Strikes and Heading South to Szczyrk

Image
Friday was the last day before the regional winter break*. Our lessons took place with a discordant but not unpleasant musical background of tractor horns. This turned out to be the first day of a month long protest by Polish farmers  across the country to protest competition from cheep Ukraine exports  (which  don't  have the same EU restrictions)  and heavy EU regulations. Apparently the government are likely listen and to move to impose new import bans on Ukrainian agricultural products. *The 2 week Winter Break happens at different times across Polish  provinces on a rotating basis from the 2nd week of January into February.  Fat Thursday,  The Thursday before ash Wednesday when you eat as many doughnuts as possible. Our boss Jaygosh brought in piles for the staff! Now that's what I call a great day to celebrate!!  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Thursday Friday was the last day before the holidays.
